Time, like an ever rolling metaphor...

Without really pausing to think about it, I've always considered 1st October 1994 as the beginning of my adult life, since it is, approximately, when I went up to university.

So I always find it disconcerting when a thing I think of as happening in a different age actually began after this date.  In this case, the Test Cricket career of Australia great Ricky Ponting.  Which started on 8th December 1995 to be precise.

Ponting seems an ever present to me.  Yet I was already in the second year of four, with prelims behind me.

Ponting has been and gone (or will have gone by the end of the Third Test against South Africa, after which he retires) and my life appears to have passed in the blink of an eye.

Ho hum.  At least we've got the Ashes.

Still here I'm afraid

Hello

Fergus, and doing two jobs (in the same organisation in the same building) taking up a lot of my time.  New baby on the way in October, too.  I won't publish the scans, but I will stick a couple of Fergus up instead, as if you were interested.

Hot schadenfreude

In an unusually serious post, my thoughts are with Diane Hill and her family at this time. Mrs Hill was decanting petrol in her home when it caught fire and she was badly burned. I know I'm not alone in making comments along the lines of "Well, that was a bloody stupid thing to do."

That evening I set myself on fire. Not intentionally. This wasn't an experiment. I was cooking and reaching for something wedged at the back of the hob when the arm of my dressing gown caught alight. Well, that was a bloody stupid thing to do. Fortunately I was able to slap out the flames, whip the dressing gown off and jump up and down on it. I'm not sure it was alight at this point, but the jumping up and down did help to deal with the adrenaline.

Next time someone does something stupid and ends up in hospital, I'll be sure to say "I'm glad that's not me, I do stupid things all the time". I hope Mrs Hill gets well soon.

Something so wonderful it's made me update my blog

Everyone should look at this. It's the scale of the universe and it's magnificent.

Oooops, Fergus crying. Better go.
